Brand Spotlight: Ibis Cycles

Founded in 1981 in a funky little workshop in Northern California, Ibis was the brainchild of Scot Nicol – a self-proclaimed bike nerd and one of mountain biking’s true pioneers. Before Ibis, Scot was the guy with a car for a band of hitchhiking bike hippies that included iconic names like Joe Breeze, Gary Fisher, and Tom Ritchey – some of the original minds that turned clunkers and fat-tired ballooner bikes into the mountain bikes we love today.

Back then, the mountain bike world was the wild west of tinkering and experimentation, and Scot Nicol was right at the heart of it starting as a frame building apprentice with the legendary Joe Breeze and Charlie Cunningham before building his own bikes out of his garage and selling them under the Ibis brand. From the start, Scot wanted to build bikes that suited his fun, playful style of riding but were durable enough to handle anything he could throw at them.

Fast forward through the transition from steel and titanium to aluminum and carbon fibre (while forgetting a tumultuous period in the early 2000’s that saw them sold to an investment firm who knew nothing about bikes) and Ibis has continued to focus on innovation and designing bikes that you just never want to stop riding.

The first Mojo

In 2006, Ibis debuted the Mojo which would cement their place in the hyper-competitive mountain bike market. Along with its iconic swooping design, part of the Mojo’s popularity was its ride anything and everything versatility which was due in no small part by implementing Dave Weagle’s DW-Link suspension system. The use of DW-Link suspension has continued to be used across all of Ibis’ full-suspension mountain bikes and is one of the reasons we love their bikes. It’s able to combine a fantastically efficient pedalling platform for the climbs with a pop and playfulness for the descents which makes Ibis bikes endlessly fun to ride.

The new HD6

After the Mojo, Ibis went on to debut the first Ripley in 2013 and the original Ripmo in 2018. The do-it-all trail machine in the Ripley and its big-hit, steep-terrain sibling in the Ripmo have been staff and customer favourites here at our shop in every iteration since their inception. In the last few years, Ibis has continued to innovate, being one of the first brands to push super wide, beefed-up mountain bike rims and expanding their lineup to include the cross-country race-winning Exie and a big mountain, long-travel enduro bike with the HD6.

Even though Ibis has been involved with mountain bike races since the very beginning, it’s not race pedigree or all-out performance that keeps its dedicated fanbase coming back for more – it’s the fact that their bikes are built to be fun. For us here at Ridley’s, it’s that same focus on fun that makes riding bikes so amazing and why we love helping people find great brands like Ibis who share in the same philosophy that we do.
